It is hard to determine an acceptable price.
In League of Legends, you can see your character so the skin being 5, 10, 20 dollars is something that people can generally find some acceptance with. For DUST, you are only going to see it when you are in your quarter, your friends won't see it for being able to show off, and the person trying to kill you doesn't give a stinky turd what you look like as the battles are too fast to go "That guy has a Caldari Navy skin!" My favorited skin is the Caldari 'Raven' Assault with an Exile Assault Rifle and NOTHING else in it. I call it Cheeves. It only exists if I want to call in a vehicle as a cheap suit and because I love the white, digital camouflage on it. If that was a skin, what do I care if my enemies see it; I already 'got mine'.*
It is the same problem in EVE. Aside from you, the only way people are going to see your vanity items is if you snapshot them in your profile picture. Pretty easy if it is the Looking Glass Ocular Implant (monocle), which goes for roughly 70 dollars worth of Aurum. But for something like Men's Commando Pants, which is about 15 dollars worth of Aurum, it isn't as easy.
* maybe that is the reason I am a terrible lover...

1. Your teammates will generally see it more as character model are bigger. 2. Hats add more than just a recoloring of a dropsuit. Heavy with a Football helmet over a Scout that is purple. 3. The opponent sees it perfectly when you kill them through the "killer snapshot." 4. The items are seen whenever you choose the load out. 5. The pre-game start lets you show it off.
I think these differences make for, well, a different kind of beast though TF2 is a good counter-example to my point. My main problem is that CCP has priced things really crazy high. At least League of Legends gives you a skin and a new splash page and, depending on the price, new particle effects and voice acting. Dunno if "digital camo assault" can keep up with hats or LoL skins. Will be interesting to see, assuming it happens.
